ياO لَيلةًa night لَمّاwhen نَأىwent far away بَدرُهاits full moon
عَنfrom أُفقِهِhis horizon باتَhe spent the night إِلىat جَنْبيmy side
O, what a night! When its full moon withdrew
O night when its full moon set
from his horizon, he spent the night beside me,
Beyond the horizon, by my side it lay.
ضَجيعَbedfellow جِسميmy body وَغَرامِيand my passion بهِfor him
ضَجيعbedfellow أسرارِيَmy secrets فيin قلبيmy heart
my body's bedfellow, while my passion for him
My body and my love for it
was the bedfellow of my secrets in my heart.
Lay down; my secrets in my heart lay.
وَزارنيand he visited me واللّيلُwhile the night مُستحْلِكٌpitch-dark
And he visited me while the night was pitch-dark,
The night came to me angry and sullen,
angry, brimming with reproach,
Full of blame and reproach.
كَأنَّas though ماwhat يُجرِمهhe perpetrates it مِنfrom يَدِيmy hand
أَوor الّذيthat which يُذنِبُهُhe commits it as a sin ذنبيmy sin
as though the wrong he committed came from my hand,
As if the wrongs from my hands,
or the sin he committed were my own sin.
Or my guilt, had caused offense.
فَلَمso … not أَزَلْI cease أَجعلI make خَدّيmy cheek لهُfor him
تُرْباًdust لِرِجْلَيْهِfor his two feet عَلىupon التُّربِthe dust
So I kept making my cheek for him
So I made my cheek the earth
dust for his feet upon the dust,
Where its feet might tread,
حَتّىuntil اِنثَنىhe turned يَضحَكُhe smiles عَنrevealing لُؤلؤٍpearls
رَطْبٍmoist ثَوىdwelt فيin مَشربٍa drinking-place عَذْبِsweet
until he turned, smiling to reveal pearls,
Until it smiled and bent down
moist, nestled in a sweet drinking-place.
With dewdrops from fresh water it drank.
وَقالَand he said ليto me حَسبُكenough for you مِمّاof what أرىI see
فقلتُso I said أوuntil ترضىyou are pleased فماfor it is not حسبِيenough for me
And he said to me, 'Enough of what I see!'
And it said to me, “Enough of what I see,”
So I said, 'Until you are pleased, it is not enough for me.'
So I said, “If you’re pleased, that’s all I need.”
