ألاAh! ربّmany a أمرٍmatter بتّI spent the night أحذرfearing غِبَّهُits aftermath
وقدand already نابنيbeset me فيهin it العناءُthe hardship المُجَشِّمُburdensome
Ah, many a matter whose aftermath I spent the night fearing,
Oh Lord, a matter I feared its misfortune
While burdensome hardship had beset me in it.
And in it I faced grave adversity
غداit dawned وهوwhile it was سِرٌّa secret لاnot يُرامُis sought اِطّلاعُهُits discovery
وعادَand it became مساءًat evening وهوwhile it was نَهْبٌplunder مُقَسَّمُdivided up
It dawned a secret whose discovery was beyond reach,
Tomorrow while it's a secret, glimpsing it isn't desired
And by evening had become plunder, divided up.
And it returned in the evening, divided spoils
تندّمتُI regretted فيin أعجازهits final stages حينwhen لمnot يكنْthere was
وقدand already فاتَhad slipped away مِنfrom كفّيَّboth my hands إلّاexcept التّندُّمُregret
I regretted it in its final stages, when nothing was left—
I regretted during its conclusion when it wasn't
After it had slipped from both my hands—but regret.
And nothing remains in my hands except regret

قضاءٌa decree جرىran its course فيماin what سخطتُI resented مبرَّمُirrevocable
My planning did not betray me in it; rather,
Planning didn't fail me in it, but rather
An irrevocable decree ran its course in what I resented.
A decree flowed in what I loathed, decisive
ولوand if كانwere لاnot يَكْدِيfails أخوthe possessor of الحزمِprudence مرّةًonce

ويُشوىand is wounded nonfatally لماthen would not ماتdie الصّحيحُthe healthy one المُسَلَّمُthe unscathed one
And were a prudent man never to fail even once
If the wise brother doesn't get burned once
Or be wounded, no sound, unscathed man would die.
And get cooked, the correct and surrendered wouldn't die
وَمَنand who ذاis it الّذيwho يُعطيgrants الإدارةَcontrol كلَّهاall of it

ومَنand who ذاis it الّذيwho فيin الأمرthe affair لاnot يُتَلَوَّمُis reproached
And who is it that grants complete control?
And who is it that gives all management?
And who is it that is not reproached in an affair?
And who is it not pained in the matter?
إذاif شئتَyou wish أنْto تلقَmeet السَّلِيمَthe unharmed one عَدِمْتَهyou cannot find him
وأكثرُand most مَنof those whom تلقىyou meet المُرَزَّىthe stricken one المُكَّلَمُthe wounded one
If you wish to meet an unharmed man, you will not find him;
If you want to meet the healthy, you'll lose him
And most whom you meet are stricken and wounded.
And most who you meet are the ill and bound
وأغبنُand the most deluded مَنof those whom تلقىyou meet منamong النّاسpeople جاهلٌan ignorant man
يظنّhe thinks الّذيthat which يُخفيهhe conceals it لاnot يُتَعَلَّمُis learned
And the most deluded of the people you meet is an ignorant man,
Most foolish is he who meets an ignorant from people
Who thinks that what he conceals will not become known.
Thinking what he hides isn't learned
ومسترسلٍand an unrestrained man فيin فعلهhis deeds بعدafter ماthat بداappeared
لعينيهbefore his eyes جهراًplainly ماwhat يَزِمّbridles ويَخطمُand halters
And many a man persists unchecked in his deeds, after there has appeared
And one who continues his deeds after it appeared
Plainly before his eyes what should bridle and halter him.
Clearly to his eyes what is forbidden and unlawful
