تَصدّينyou turn away عنّيfrom me للمَشيبِbecause of gray hair كأنّماas though
صَرفتُI sent away شبابيmy youth أوor دعوتُI summoned مشيبيmy gray hair
You turn away from me because of my gray hair, as though
You blame me for graying, as if
I had sent away my youth or summoned my gray hair.
I wasted my youth or invited old age upon myself.
وكيفand how سُلوِّيmy forgetting عنfrom حبيبٍa beloved إذاwhen مضىhe departed
فلاso no متعةٌpleasure ليfor me بعدهُafter him بحبيبِin a beloved
And how can I forget a beloved once he is gone,
How can I be consoled for a departed beloved?
When no beloved gives me pleasure after him?
After him, I have no joy in any other beloved.
كأنِّيَas though I were رَبْعٌa dwelling بعدهafter him غيرُnot آهلٍinhabited
ووادٍand a valley جفاهhas forsaken it القطْرُthe rain غيرnot خضيبِverdant
I am like a dwelling left uninhabited after him,
After him I am like an uninhabited quarter,
And a valley forsaken by rain, without a tinge of green.
A valley whose rain has ceased, no longer fertile.
فلاso do not تندُبيlament عنديin my presence الشّبابyouth فإنّنيfor I
بكائيmy weeping عليهfor him وحدَهَhim alone ونحيبيand my sobbing
So do not lament youth in my presence, for
So do not lament youth in my presence, for I
My weeping and my sobbing are for him alone.
Only weep and moan for it alone.
