وزائرٍ ما زار إلّا

وزائرٍ ما زار إلّا

في سوادِ الظُّلَمِ

في سوادِ الظُّلَمِ

And a visitor who came only

A visitor who visits only

in the blackness of darkness.

In the darkness of night

جاد ولم يدرِ بما

جاد ولم يدرِ بما

جاد ولمّا يعلمِ

جاد ولمّا يعلمِ

He gave generously, not knowing what

Gives generously though unaware

he gave, and still did not know.

Of what it is he gives

ومتّعَ القَلْبَ من ال

ومتّعَ القَلْبَ من ال

خير بما لم يَدُمِ

خير بما لم يَدُمِ

And delighted the heart with the

And brings joy to the heart though

good that did not last.

The joy is fleeting

بات الكرى يشفع لي

بات الكرى يشفع لي

في نيلِ تلك النِّعَمِ

في نيلِ تلك النِّعَمِ

Sleep spent the night interceding for me

The noble plead for me at night

to gain those blessings.

To attain such gifts

عطيّةٌ ما طُلبتْ

عطيّةٌ ما طُلبتْ

ومِنَّةٌ لم تُرَمِ

ومِنَّةٌ لم تُرَمِ

A gift that was not requested,

A gift unasked for

and a favor that was not sought.

A kindness undeserved

لا عيبَ إلّا أنّها

لا عيبَ إلّا أنّها

زيارةٌ في الحُلُمِ

زيارةٌ في الحُلُمِ

No fault, except that it is

No fault but that it is

a visit in a dream.

A visitation in a dream
