Behold, my heart, since your departure,
Alas! After you my heart
has come to its senses, and my folly has left me.
Awakened, leaving behind my vain desires.

So I became free of my heart’s inward cares,
So now the heart's consciousness is empty,
though it had been utterly preoccupied.
Preoccupied as it was with pressing concerns.

And I have, O people, no inclination
Why, O people, do I have no ambition
toward a jeweled woman, or one unadorned.
For a life of luxury or idleness?

for one who sets, vanishing through separation.
Toward a fading evening of disappointed hopes.

while settled there, for one poised to depart.
Where I was a guest soon to depart.

How strange that the wrist's adornment

Clings to one who is no intimate!

Of fertile land beside the barren tract.
