There is no sin in passionate love.

    Rather, it is sheer disease.

It is earnestness brought on, with

    God's decree, by jest.

    And darkness—no night traveler through

it has a dawn in all eternity.

It is drunkenness, like the coursing

    of wine through your limbs.

And a sickness with no recovery,

    nor any improvement in it.

    And torment, if far from

    it are union and generosity.

Woe to the lovers! Into deep waters

    of immense depth they fell.

    They denied love, and yet

    hid it, then confessed it.

And they have tongues of tears

    that eloquently spoke for it.

If only the lovers would die,

and so give others rest and find rest themselves.
