ياO قَلبُheart قُلtell ليto me أينَwhere صادَفكencountered you الهَوىlove
أَمor كَيفَhow عَنّappeared لكَto you الغزالُthe gazelle السّانِحُcrossing from left to right
O heart, tell me where love encountered you.
O heart, tell me where did love find you
Or how did the gazelle crossing from left to right appear before you?
Or how did the gentle gazelle entice you
كيفَhow اِطّباكَenticed you إِلىtoward الهوىlove غَمْرٌa novice بِهِwithin him
سُكرُintoxication الصِّباyouth جَذَعاًas a young colt وأنتَwhile you القارحُthe full-grown steed
How did a novice entice you toward love, possessed by
How did the wine of youth inebriate you to love
The intoxication of youth—a young colt, while you are a full-grown steed?
While you were a sprout and it was the planter
إِنَّindeed الّذينthose whom عَلىat مِنىًMina عُلِّقْتَهُمْyou were made to love them
راحواthey departed وَكَمand how often أَردَىslew المقيمthe one who stays الرّائحُthe departing one
Indeed, those you were made to love at Mina
Indeed, those whom you were attached to
Have departed—and how often has the departing one slain the one who stays!
Departed, and how much did the resident wind scatter
ماnot ضرّهمْharmed them طَرَحواthey cast down الحدوجَthe camel litters وإنّماwhereas in fact
أحداجُهمْtheir litters مُهَجٌsouls لناof ours وجوانِحُand ribs
It did them no harm to cast down the litters; yet
It did not harm them to shed the sarongs, but rather
Their litters are nothing but our souls and ribs.
Their affections for us were tender and pliant
وتكلّفواand they took pains ذَبْحَslaughtering الهَدِيِّthe sacrificial animals وإنّماwhereas in fact

And they took pains to slaughter the sacrificial animals; yet
And they took care to slaughter the sacrifice, but rather
It is their glances that slaughter us there.
Their glances for us there were the slaughterers
