And you settled in my heart, though you are stingy,

    Where no generous benefactor dwells.

And you dwelt in one whose every flowing current

Never rests, from longing for you and ardent desire.

And you took me captive, though I am free—and how often

Love has taken captives! And you slew one who is not beguiled.

And you wished love concealed, so I concealed it,

Yet tears reveal what I conceal and proclaim.

And you would have silenced a single tongue of complaint,

Had I no other tongues with which to complain.
