جلب البرقُ لقلبي

إذ سرى بَرْحاً طويلا

The lightning brought to my heart,

The lightning brought joy

as it coursed, prolonged anguish.

To my heart as it flashed a long smile

سَلّ لِلعَينين في جُنْ

ح الدُّجى سيفاً صقيلا

ح الدُّجى سيفاً صقيلا

It drew before my eyes, beneath the wing

It unsheathed for my eyes in the shade

of darkness, a polished sword.

Of dusk a polished sword

وهداني في سُرى اللّي

وهداني في سُرى اللّي

لِ وقد جُرتُ السّبيلا

لِ وقد جُرتُ السّبيلا

And guided me on a journey by night,

And guided me on my night journey

when I had strayed from the path.

Though I had lost my way

وأراني من بعيدٍ

وأراني من بعيدٍ

ذلك الحيَّ الحُلولا

ذلك الحيَّ الحُلولا

And showed me from afar

And showed me from afar

that encamped tribe,

That sweet oasis alive

وخياماً حلهنّ ال

وخياماً حلهنّ ال

حسنُ صَعْباً وذَلولا

حسنُ صَعْباً وذَلولا

and tents inhabited by

With tents where Beauty resides

beauty, untamed and tame.

Proud yet gentle

لم أزلْ أسأل فيهن

لم أزلْ أسأل فيهن

نَ على الفقر بخيلا

نَ على الفقر بخيلا

I never ceased to plead within them,

I never ceased begging there

despite my poverty, with one miserly

For wealth in my poverty

وعزيزاً صرتُ في الحب

وعزيزاً صرتُ في الحب

بِ له عبداً ذليلا

بِ له عبداً ذليلا

and proud; in love I became

And in love I grew dear

his abject slave.

Though to it I was a lowly slave

كلّما اِستبدل منّي

كلّما اِستبدل منّي

لم أردْ منه بديلا

لم أردْ منه بديلا

Whenever he chose another in my place,

Whenever it took from me

I wanted no other in his place.

I wanted no substitute
