Is there a protector from a choking grief that never passes,
Is there any refuge from the anguish of fate
or an intercessor for a need that is never fulfilled?
Or any intercessor for a need that will not be granted

at a halting-place slippery for riding beasts.

time has effaced it, breaching and dismantling it.
Time has caused it to decay and ruin

Courtyards that at dawn were sky,
Courtyards that were like the sky
then, through calamities, became earth by evening.
Then brought down by events into ruins

and found it mountain-like in height and breadth,
Looking like a giant in height and width

Travel has marked its towns with scars
affecting parts of it and sparing others.
Some effaced, some still visible

the circling days have worn parts away and wasted it.
The days have worn it down and made it old

Every group of warriors, if they growl over
from his fallen prey, he bit down and narrowed his eyes.
A slain foe, stiffens then calms down

Shifted from caution to wonder and awe

The way of the lion, whenever resolved to pounce
