ماwhatever أَنسَI forget لاnot أَنسَI forget غَياثاًGhiyath وَقَدand indeed
أَنشَدتُI recited يَوماًone day شِعرِيَmy poetry المُنتَخَبthe chosen
Whatever I forget, I will not forget Ghiyath, when
What solace have I, no solace relieves me, though
one day I recited my chosen poetry.
One day I recited my choicest poetry,
فَقالَthen he said ماnot قَصَّرَfell short هَذاthis الفَتىthe young man
لَكِنَّbut هَذاthis الحَرفَthe word كَيفَhow اِنتَصَبbecame accusative
He said, “This young man has not fallen short,
And he said: 'This youth has not fallen short,'
but how did this word come to be accusative?”
But, 'How has this letter assumed an oblique case ending?'
فَصَكَّهُthen he slapped him مَنthe one who كانَwas مِنfrom خَلفِهِbehind him
فَقالَthen he said ماnot هَذاthis جَوابٌan answer يَجِبis fitting
Then the man behind him slapped him.
So he who sat behind him slapped him,
He said, “This is no fitting answer.”
And said: 'This is no fit answer.'
فَقالَthen he said هَذاكَthat one لَهُto him هَكَذاthus
يَكونُis لِلقِبطِto the Copts جَوابُthe answer العَرَبthe Arabs
Then that man said to him, “Thus
He replied: 'That man is accustomed
do the Arabs answer the Copts.
To make the Copts answer the Arabs thus.'
أَأَنتَdo you تَدريknow النَصبَthe accusative case مِنfrom غَيرِهِother than it
مِنfrom دونِshort of ذاthis تَقرُبُcome near مِنكَto you القَرَبthe waterskins
Can you tell the accusative from other cases?
Do you know the oblique case ending without him
Waterskins are closer to you than that.”
From whom kinship cannot draw you nigh?
