لَقَدindeed جارَacted unjustly ماwhat تَشكوهُyou complain of it فيin الحُكمِjudgment وَاِعتَداand transgressed
وَأَسرَفَand went to excess فيin أَفعالِهِits deeds وَتَمَّرَداand rebelled
What you complain of has indeed been unjust in judgment and transgressed,
What you complain of has gone too far in rule and tyranny
And has gone to excess in its deeds and rebelled.
And exceeded in its deeds and rebellion
فَمَنso who ليfor me بِأَنthat لَوif only كُنتُI was أَعرِفُI know حيلَةًa means
تَصَيِّرُmakes أَجفانيmy eyelids لِأَجفانِكَfor your eyelids الفِداthe ransom
Who could grant me this wish: to know a way
If only I knew a trick
To make my eyelids a ransom for your eyelids?
To make my eyelids a ransom for yours
دَهَتafflicted عَينَكَyour eye العَينُthe evil eye الَّتيwhich لَوif قَضىdecreed القَضاfate
بِأَنَّكَthat you مِنهاfrom it سَوفَwill تُصبِحُyou become أَرمَداwith inflamed eyes
The evil eye has struck your eye—which, if fate decreed
That eye of yours blinded the eye which, if fate decreed
That from it you would come to suffer inflamed eyes,
That from it you would become bleary-eyed
فَمُذso, since بُدِّلَتwas changed مِنfrom نَرجِسٍnarcissus بِشَقائِقٍinto anemones
أَعادَتturned لُجَينَsilver الدَمعِtears مِنّيfrom me عَسجَداgold
Then, since it was changed from narcissus to anemones,
Since it was changed from a narcissus to anemones
Turned the silver of my tears to gold.
It returned the flowing tears from me, compressed
سَلَلتَyou drew حُسامُthe keen sword اللَحظِthe gaze مِنهاfrom it عَلىagainst الوَرىhumankind
وَقَدand indeed كانَit was أَحرىmore fitting أَنthat يُصانَbe safeguarded وَيُغمَداand be sheathed
You drew from it the sword of your gaze against humankind,
The sword of glances slipped from it upon people
Though it would have been more fitting to keep it safe and sheathed.
And it was more fitting that it be sheathed and wrapped
فَأَنتَso you الَّذيthe one who أَبلَيتَهاyou afflicted it بِالَّذيwith what بِهاis in it
إِذاwhen السَيفُthe sword لَمnot يُغمَدis sheathed تَراكِبَهُbuilds up on it الصَداrust
So you are the one who afflicted it with what ails it:
So you are the one who wore it out with that which is in it
When a sword is not sheathed, rust builds up on it.
If the sword is not sheathed, rust will accumulate on it
