لَناwe have مُغَنٍّa singer حَسَنُpleasant العِشرَهُcompanionship
وَخَمرَةٌand wine أَذكىmore fiery مِنَthan الجَمرَهthe glowing ember
We have a singer, pleasant in company,
We have a singer, good company,
And wine more fiery than a glowing ember.
And wine more fragrant than embers.
وَلَستُand I am not تُخليyou leave empty ليfor me يديmy hand أَنتَyou مِنof
تُفّاحَةٍan apple كَلّاno indeed وَلاnor بَسرَهan unripe date
Nor am I left by you with my hand empty of
Don't withhold your hand from me, neither
An apple—no indeed—nor an unripe date.
An apple nor raisins.
وَقَدand indeed وَقَدناwe have kindled فَحَماًcharcoal ماnot لَهُit has
شَرارَةٌa spark فيin طَبعِهاits nature شِرَّهmischief
And we have kindled charcoal that has no
We've kindled a fire devoid
Spark with mischief in its nature.
Of glowing embers within it.
إِذاwhen غَداbecomes ساسَمُهُits dark sāsam wood بَقماًred baqqam dyewood
قَرَّتis gladdened بِهِby it عَينُthe eye of أَخيone afflicted by القِرَّهthe cold
When its dark sāsam wood becomes red baqqam wood,
If its flames at dawn die down,
It gladdens the eye of one who suffers the cold.
My glutton brother's eye waters for it.
فَاِقنَعso be content بِماwith what عِندَis with أَخيكَyour brother الَّذيwho
يَقنَعُis content بِالفَضلَةِwith the leftovers وَالكِسرَهand a morsel of bread
So be content with what your brother has,
Be content with what your brother has,
Who is content with leftovers and a morsel of bread.
Who contents himself with crumbs and broken bread.
فُتُوَّةٌchivalrous generosity مِنهُfrom him عَقيلِيَّةٌʿAqīlī

His is ʿAqīlī chivalrous generosity,
A scrap from him would be princely,
Which anyone with experience approves.
Which the experienced would accept as bounty.
لِمَwhy لاnot نُوَفّيwe give in full يَومَناour day حَقَّهits due
وَنَشمُتُand we mock الفَطنَةَdiscernment بِالغِرَّهwith heedlessness
Why do we not give our day its due
Why don't we give the day its due
And mock discernment with heedlessness?
And gain wisdom from drunkenness?
تاللَهِby God لَنwill not يَعبُرَpass ظُهرٌnoon بِناby us
حَتّىuntil نُرىwe are seen مِنbecause of سُكرِناour drunkenness عِبرَهa cautionary example
By God, no noon shall pass us by
By God! No camel's back will bear us
Until we are seen as a warning because of our drunkenness.
Until we see lessons in our drunkenness.
