لَناfor us أَخٌa brother عِندَهُin his possession مِنَof الحِكَمِwisdom
لَنا أَخٌ عِندَهُ مِنَ الحِكَمِ
ماwhat عَجَزَتfell short عَنof بُلوغِهِattaining it هِمَميmy aspirations
ما عَجَزَت عَن بُلوغِهِ هِمَمي
We have a brother with such wisdom
We have a brother who possesses wisdom
as my aspirations have failed to attain.
Beyond what my aspirations can attain
إِنif هُوَhe صاغَfashioned النَوالُthe gift مِنهُfrom him لَناfor us
إِن هُوَ صاغَ النَوالُ مِنهُ لَنا
رَندَجَهُhe blackened it بِاِعتِذارِwith an apology مُحتَشِمِa bashful man
رَندَجَهُ بِاِعتِذارِ مُحتَشِمِ
If he fashions a gift of his own for us,
If he prepared a gift for us
he blackens it with a bashful man's apology—
He would gracefully wrap it with a modest apology
صِناعَةٌan art إِنَّماonly تَصِحُّsucceeds لِمَنfor whoever
صِناعَةٌ إِنَّما تَصِحُّ لِمَن
كانَتwas لَهُfor him آلَةًan instrument مِنَof الكَرَمِgenerosity
كانَت لَهُ آلَةً مِنَ الكَرَمِ
an art that succeeds only for one
A craft that is only proper for one
whose instrument is generosity.
