لَناwe have أَخٌa brother يَحفَظُprotects مَنwhoever خانَهُbetrayed him
أَيُّany اِمرِئٍman صاحَبَهُbefriended him زانَهُgraced him
We have a brother who protects whoever betrays him.
We have a brother who remembers those who betrayed him
He graces any man who befriends him.
What man was ever faithful to the friend who wronged him?
ماnot زَحَفَcrept المَطلُdelay إِلىtoward وَعدِهِhis promise
قَطُّever وَلاnor نازَلَchallenged سُلطانَهُhis authority
Delay has not crept toward his promise—
The hopeful man never crawls to keep his word
not ever—nor challenged his authority.
Nor does the mighty ever humble his power
أَقسَمتُI swore لَوif أَبصَرَهُsaw him حاتِمٌHatim
لَكانَwould surely have been يُستَحسَنُadmired إِحسانَهُhis generosity
I swear, had Hatim seen him,
I swear if Hatem had seen him
his generosity would surely have been admired.
His kindness would have been admired
