لَناfor us أَخٌa brother خَيرُgoodness بِلاwithout شَرٍّevil
أَسمَحُmore generous مِنthan غَيثٍrain وَمِنand than بَحرِthe sea
We have a brother—all goodness, with no evil,
We have a brother, best without evil,
More generous than rain and than the sea.
More generous than rain or sea.
إِخاؤُهُhis brotherly affection ماemphatic particle بَينَamong أَخلاقِهِhis virtues
كَالرَوضِlike a garden بَينَamid الماءِthe water وَالزَهرِand the blossoms
His brotherly affection, among his virtues,
His brotherhood amidst his manners
Is like a garden amid water and blossoms.
Is like a garden amidst water and flowers.
أَخشَنُroughest ماwhat أَلمَسُI touch مِنof عَتبِهِhis reproach
أَرطَبُmost tender ماwhat يُلمَسُis touched مِنof عُذريmy excuse
The roughest touch I feel in his reproach
Roughest is what I feel of his reproach,
Is the gentlest touch felt in my excuse.
Most gentle is what I feel of his excuse.
إِذاwhen أَتىcomes قَصديmy purpose إِلىto بابِهِhis door
أَراهُhe shows it إِكراماًhonor مِنَfrom السِرِّsecrecy
When my purpose comes to his door,
When I visit at his door,
He shows it honor in secret.
I see it as an honor from one most dear.
فَمَفرِقيso the crown of my head فيin التاجِthe crown مِنthrough رِفدِهِhis bounty
وَجيدُهُand his neck فيin العِقدِthe necklace مِنthrough شُكريmy gratitude
So my head wears a crown through his bounty,
So he joins my crown through his river,
And his neck a necklace through my gratitude.
And I find his gift in my necklace of gratitude.
لَولاwere it not for اِعتِلاقيmy clinging بِعُرىto the bonds وُدِّهِhis affection
ماnot تَمَّwas attained ليfor me ماwhat تَمَّwas attained مِنof فَخريmy glory
Were it not for my clinging to the bonds of his affection,
If not for my attachment to the rope of his love,
I would not have attained the glory I have attained.
My pride never could have been perfected.
