ياO شادِناًyoung gazelle قَصُرَتfell short يَديmy hand عَنof نَيلِهِreaching him
يا شادِناً قَصُرَت يَدي عَن نَيلِهِ
مِنfrom بَعدِafter ماthat كانَتit was بِهِto him تَتَمَسَّكُholding fast
مِن بَعدِ ما كانَت بِهِ تَتَمَسَّكُ
O young gazelle, my hand can no longer reach you,
O my joy, my hand has fallen short of attaining it
after it once held fast to you.
After it had clung onto it
لاdo not تَحسَبَنّيthink me فيin الهَوىlove بِكَwith you مُشرِكاًassociating a partner
لا تَحسَبَنّي في الهَوى بِكَ مُشرِكاً
أَحَداًanyone فَإِنfor if أَفعَلَI do فَإِنّيthen indeed I am مُشرِكُa polytheist
أَحَداً فَإِن أَفعَلَ فَإِنّي مُشرِكُ
Do not think that in love I set beside you
Do not think I share anyone else with you in love
anyone else; for if I do, then I am a polytheist.
If I do so, then I am a polytheist
