أَيُّهاO you اللائِمُthe reproacher ليme فيfor حُبِّlove of مَنone who
لَيسَdoes not يَرثيtake pity لِيَon me مِنbecause of ذُلّيmy abasement لَدَيهِbefore him
O you who reproach me for loving one
O you who blame me for loving someone
Who takes no pity on me in my abasement before him,
Who does not sympathize with my humiliation before him,
أَنتَyou تَدريknow أَنَّthat ماnot مِنof شَهوَتيmy desire
أَنto أَرىsee قَلبيmy heart أَسيراًa captive فيin يَدَيهِhis hands
You know that it is not my desire
You know that it is not my desire
To see my heart a captive in his hands.
To see my heart a captive in his hands.
حَلَّbefell بيme ماwhat كُنتُI was عَنهُof it غافِلاًunaware
لَيسَdoes not يَدريknow المَرءُa man ماwhat يَقضيbrings an end عَلَيهِto him
What I had been unaware of befell me;
What befell me I had been oblivious of;
A man does not know what will be his undoing.
Man knows not what fate has in store for him.
