يَاِبنَO son of الفُطوسَةِal-Fuṭūsa (the flat-nosed woman) عِنديI have
شِعرٌverse يَقودُleads حِرانَكyour obstinacy
O son of al-Fuṭūsa, I have
O son of nobility in me
Verse that reins in your obstinacy.
There is poetry that leads your confusion
إِذاif التَقىmeets بِكَwith you مِنهُfrom it
هَجوٌsatire أَراكَit shows you هَوانَكyour humiliation
If from it there comes to meet you
When it encounters you
A satire, it will show you your humiliation.
Satire shows you your disgrace
فَإِنso if تَصاوَنتَyou guard yourself عَمّاfrom what يَقولُهُit says it
فيكَabout you صانَكit safeguards you
So if you keep yourself clear of what it says
So if you compromise what it says
About you, it will safeguard you;
It protects you in it
أَولاotherwise سَتُمنَعُyou will be prevented مِنfrom أَنto
تُديرُyou turn خَلفيbehind me لِسانَكyour tongue
Otherwise, you will be prevented from
First you will be prevented from
Wagging your tongue behind my back.
Turning your tongue behind my back
