O snake charmer, who has always had

    Snakes in his basket.

If you find my verse ugly, what use

Are gardens to a blind man?

Take backbiting by the hand and turn back with it

From one whose rhymes are sultans.

    لَهُ مِنَ الهَجوِ سَكاكينُ

    Beware my verse: it is a rogue;

    It has knives of satire.

When I invoke this verse to protect myself,

    The devils flee from it.

If Egypt holds us, how many a dwelling

    Has branches and date-cluster stalks!

The rooks must be set up

    On a chessboard with viziers.
