ياO سَهلُSahl سَهَّلتَyou made easy عَيشيmy life
مِنfrom بَعدِafter ماthat كانَit was وَعراrough
O Sahl, you made my life easy
O plain, you made my life easy
After it had been rough.
After it was rough terrain
أَمطَرتَهُyou showered it مَكرُماتٍgenerous gifts
كَسَتهِthey clothed it عُشباًgrass وَزَهراand flowers
You showered it with generous gifts
You generously rained it
That clothed it in grass and flowers.
Covering it with grass and flowers
فَصارَso it became بِالخِصبِthrough fertility رَوضاًa garden
وَكانَand it had been بِالمَحلِthrough drought قَفراa wasteland
So through fertility it became a garden,
So it became a fertile garden
Though in drought it had been a wasteland.
While it was barren land
وَجُدتَand you gave generously بِالرِيِّwith irrigation حَتّىuntil
يَخالُكَtakes you for البَحرُthe sea بَحراa sea
And you gave water so generously that
You brought it sufficient irrigation
The sea takes you for a sea.
That the sea seems to you a sea
وَفيand in جِنانِكَyour gardens أَمسىbecame
هِلالُthe crescent عِزِّيَof my glory بَدراa full moon
And in your gardens was transformed
And in your gardens the eve
My glory's crescent into a full moon.
My glory crescent became a full moon
وَصارَand became طَعمُthe taste حَياتيof my life
حُلواًsweet وَماand had not زالَceased to be مُرّاًbitter
And the taste of my life became
And the taste of my life became
Sweet, though it had always been bitter.
Sweet while it was bitter
وَكُنتُand I was لِلهَمِّto sorrow عَبداًa slave
فَاليَومَso today أَصبَحتُI have become حُرّاfree
And I had been a slave to sorrow,
I was a slave to worries
So today I have become free.
But today I became free
أَقطَعتَنيyou granted me مِنكَfrom you وُدّاًaffection
جَنَيتُI reaped ليfor myself مِنهُfrom it فَخراglory
You granted me your affection,
You granted me affection
From which I reaped glory for myself.
I gained pride from it
وَصِرتُand I began أَعلوto rise إِلىto أَنthat
طاوَلتُI rivaled in stature زَيداًZayd وَعَمراand Amr
And I began to rise until
And I rose up high until
I rivaled Zayd and Amr in stature.
I surpassed Zayd and Amr
فَياso, oh لَهاfor them مِنof أَيادٍfavors
أَعادَتِturned back العُسرَhardship يُسراinto ease
So, what favors these are,
What blessed hands
That turned hardship back into ease,
That turned hardship into ease
مِنfrom مُنعِمٍa benefactor طابَwas noble أَصلاًin origin
وَمَكرِمٍand a generous giver جَلَّwas exalted قَدراin rank
From a benefactor of noble origin,
From a benefactor of noble origin
And a generous giver of exalted rank.
And honorable, great worth
فَلاso never فَقَدتُكَmay I lose you جاهاas a source of honor
وَلاnor عَدِمتُكَmay I lack you ذُخراas a treasured reserve
So may I never lose you as my source of honor,
So I lost no glory through you
Nor lack you as my treasured reserve.
Nor did I lack provision
