O master, never has a rein been turned
O master, you turned away
Away from his hearing by praise, ever since he came to be.
Since praise was unpleasant to your ear
لَكَfor you العَطاياthe gifts الَّتيwhich جَناهاtheir fruit
لَكَ العَطايا الَّتي جَناها

حُلوٌ إِذا ذاقَهُ الرَجاءُ
Yours are the gifts whose fruit
Yours are the gifts you have reaped
Is sweet when hope tastes it.
Sweet when tasted by hope
وَفيكَand in you ضُرٌّharm وَفيكَand in you نَفعٌbenefit
وَفيكَ ضُرٌّ وَفيكَ نَفعٌ
كَأَنَّكَas though you were الداءُthe disease وَالدَواءُand the cure
كَأَنَّكَ الداءُ وَالدَواءُ
And in you is harm, and in you is benefit,
In you is harm and benefit
As though you were the disease and the cure.
As if you were the illness and cure
