وَإِنَّ طِفلَ الدُجى قَد صارَ مُكتَهِلا
O full moon, the full moon has already set,
O moon, the moon has set
And the child of darkness has grown middle-aged.
And the child of darkness has become complete

مُرُّ المَذاقِ أَعادَت صابَهُ عَسَلا
So unveil her who, if she appears while life's savor
So pass, for when it appears and life is pleasant
Is bitter to the taste, turns its bitter sap into honey.
Bitter in taste, it makes its morning honey
فَصُبحُناfor our dawn بِبَقاياwith remnants of اللَيلِthe night مُختَلِطٌmingled
فَصُبحُنا بِبَقايا اللَيلِ مُختَلِطٌ
كَأَنَّهُas though it were أَزرَقٌa blue-eyed one قَدalready لاحَappeared مُكتَحِلاwith kohl-lined eyes
كَأَنَّهُ أَزرَقٌ قَد لاحَ مُكتَحِلا
For our dawn is mingled with the remnants of night,
Our morning is mixed with the remnants of night
As though it were a blue-eyed one appearing with kohl-lined eyes.
As if it were blue, now clad in kohl
