ياO لُعبَةًa doll مِنَof جَوهَرٍgemstone شَفّافٍtransparent
يا لُعبَةً مِنَ جَوهَرٍ شَفّافٍ
وَقَضيبَand a bough بانٍa bān tree ناعِمَtender الأَطارفِthe tips
وَقَضيبَ بانٍ ناعِمَ الأَطارفِ
O doll of transparent gemstone,
O toy of translucent essence
and a bān bough with tender tips.
And smooth wand of supple ends
بَعدُfar off الوِصالُunion فَلَوso if مَدَدتُI stretched out يَديmy hand لَماwould not
بَعدُ الوِصالُ فَلَو مَدَدتُ يَدي لَما
وَصَلَتreached إِلىto أَطرافِهاher extremities أَطرافيmy extremities
وَصَلَت إِلى أَطرافِها أَطرافي
Union is far off; were I to stretch out my hand, never
After connexion if I reached my hand
would my fingertips reach hers.
My fingertips would not attain her tips
فَاِجعَلso make سَلامَكَyour greeting فيin جَوازِكَyour passing واسِعاًample
فَاِجعَل سَلامَكَ في جَوازِكَ واسِعاً
إِذاif كانَis بِرُّكَyour kindness ضَيِّقُnarrow الأَكنافِthe bounds
إِذا كانَ بِرُّكَ ضَيِّقُ الأَكنافِ
So make your greeting ample as you pass,
So make your farewell wide in your straits
if your kindness is narrow in its bounds.
