وَالجزعُ يَنثُرُ في العَقيقِ عَقيقا
O day of parting, you have indeed slain a company.
The day we parted, it rendered groups asunder,
And anguish scatters carnelians in al-ʿAqīq.
And anguish scatters carnelian in carnelian.

You gilded my tears when they came to you silvered,
You took my tears when you came to say farewell,
And left their daisies as red anemones.
And left my eyelids to shed them copiously.

لَن يَغتَدي الكافورُ مِنهُ خَلوقا
And against the will of him whose patience you wore threadbare,
And though the camphor of patience is your nature,
The camphor from him will not become saffron perfume.
Camphor itself could not help being dissolved.
