O brother who does not embitter the sweetness of brotherhood

With invective of his own or with rejection,

And you who enter evening with radiance and praise,

And greet morning with chivalry and youth,

And you who have built your glory through striving

In the arenas of honor and eminence:

I have need of wine, though

I am not among those counted as poor.

So preserve the dignity of my appeal today—otherwise

I shall not reserve my praise for you alone—

With choice wine that, when life's garden withers,

Makes the blossom of joy spring up within it.

Whenever decanted, the drinking companions see it as

    Gold beneath white silver,

Especially as the sky reveals to us

Herself in a dusky, gauzy robe,

And the hills, in garments of herbage, appear

In saffron-colored robes and yellow ones.

    فَوَنُعماكَ ما عَداكَ رَجائي

    So be generous with whatever is available of it;

For, by your bounty, my hope has not gone beyond you.
