أَتىcame زائِريmy visitor مِنfrom صُدغِهِhis temple-lock مِثلَlike صَدِّهِhis rebuff
وَقَدand already لاحَgleamed دُرُّpearls الجَوِّthe sky فيin لازَوَردِهِits lapis lazuli
My visitor came, his temple-lock resembling his rebuff,
My visitor came to me, his cheek like his sword's edge,
And the sky’s pearls were already gleaming in its lapis blue.
And the pearl gleamed in his spittle like a sapphire.
فَعاطَيتُهُso I shared wine with him صَفراءَyellow wine صِرفاًunmixed كَأَنَّماas though
عَلىon كاسِهاits cup ماwhat ضَمَّهُheld it together عَقدُthe knot عِقدِهِhis necklace
So I shared with him unmixed yellow wine, as though
So I gave him a blonde, as if
Its cup bore what his necklace’s knot held together.
On her cup was what his necklace embraced.
وَعانَقتُهُand I embraced him مِنfrom فَوقِabove وَردِroses فِراشِهِhis bed
بِغَيرِwithout وِسادٍa pillow غَيرَother than خَدّيmy cheek لِخَدِّهِfor his cheek
And I embraced him upon the roses of his bed,
And I embraced him above the bed's roses
With no pillow for his cheek but my cheek,
With no pillow but my cheek to his.
إِلىuntil أَنthat تَبَدّىappeared الصُبحُdawn مِنfrom خَلَلِthe gaps between الرُبىthe hills
كَجِسمِlike the body of حُسامٍa keen sword سُلَّwas drawn مِنfrom ثَوبِthe robe of غِمدِهِits scabbard
Until dawn appeared through the gaps between the hills,
Until dawn broke through the dark
Like the body of a keen sword drawn from its scabbard’s robe.
Like the body of a drawn sword from its sheath.
