طالَgrew long لَيليmy night حَتّىuntil لَقَدindeed خالَthought طَرفيmy eye
طالَ لَيلي حَتّى لَقَد خالَ طَرفي
أَنهُthat it لَيسَdoes not يَلتَقيmeet بِالنَهارِwith the day
أَنهُ لَيسَ يَلتَقي بِالنَهارِ
My night grew so long that my eye came to think
The night hath been so long that mine eyes at length
That it would not meet the day.
Have grown unused to seeing the light of dawn.
وَمَتىand when لَمdid not تَطُلgrow long عَلَيَّfor me اللَياليthe nights
وَمَتى لَم تَطُل عَلَيَّ اللَيالي
بَينَbetween ميعادِهِhis appointed time وَبَينَand between اِنتِظاريmy waiting
بَينَ ميعادِهِ وَبَينَ اِنتِظاري
And when have the nights not dragged on for me
When the nights cease not to be long for me,
Between his appointed time and my waiting?
‘Tis long ere the tryst and longer ere the dawn.
