قَدindeed ضاقَتِhas grown constrained الحيلَةُresourcefulness بيfor me فيwith رَشاًa fawn
قَد ضاقَتِ الحيلَةُ بي في رَشاً
لاnot يَقبَلُhe accepts الرِشوَةَa bribe فيin وُدّيlove for me
لا يَقبَلُ الرِشوَةَ في وُدّي
My ingenuity has failed me with a fawn
My means are exhausted in bribing the guardian,
Who accepts no bribe to love me.
Who accepts no bribe for his affection.
ماnot سِرتُI went بِالشَكوىwith the complaint إِلىto سَمعِهِhis hearing
ما سِرتُ بِالشَكوى إِلى سَمعِهِ
قَطُّever فَأَشرَفتُand so I came close عَلىto وَعدِa promise
قَطُّ فَأَشرَفتُ عَلى وَعدِ
Never have I brought my complaint to his ear
Never have I complained of him to his hearing,
And thereby come within reach of a promise.
Though I have attained the highest dignity.
