قَدindeed كانَwas جِسميmy body غَيرَnot مَنهوكِworn down
وَكانَand was دَمعيmy tears غَيرَnot مَسفوكِshed
My body once was not worn down,
My body was not worn down
And my tears were unshed,
And my tears were not shed
حَتّىuntil تَهَتَّكتُI cast off restraint وَلَولاand were it not for الهَوىlove
إِذاًthen لَماwould not كُنتُI was بِمَهتوكِdisgraced
Until I cast off restraint; and were it not for love,
Until passion violated me, else
I would not then have been disgraced.
I would not have been broken
فَلاso do not تَلُمblame حُرّاًa free man غَداbecame حائِراًbewildered
مُذsince صارَhe became مَملوكاًa slave لِمَملوكِto a slave
So do not blame a free man who grew bewildered
So do not blame a free man who became lost
Since he became the slave of a slave.
Since he became enslaved to the enslaved
