اِسمَعlisten جُعَلناmay we be made فِداكاyour ransom
اِسمَع جُعَلنا فِداكا
وَلاand may not عَدِمناwe lose بَقاكاyour continued life
وَلا عَدِمنا بَقاكا
Listen—may we be your ransom,
Hear us, we sacrifice ourselves for you
and may we never lose your continued presence.
And do not let us lose you
إِنَّindeed الَّذيthe one who أَنتَyou صَبٌّlovesick
إِنَّ الَّذي أَنتَ صَبٌّ
بِحُبِّهِwith love for him قَدalready أَذاكاhe has hurt you
بِحُبِّهِ قَد أَذاكا
Indeed, the one you are deeply
Indeed the one whom you ardently love
in love with has already hurt you.
With his love has harmed you
فَأَنتَso you تَحنوshow tenderness عَلَيهِtoward him
فَأَنتَ تَحنو عَلَيهِ
وَماand not يَرىhe sees لَكَfor you ذاكاthat
وَما يَرى لَكَ ذاكا
Yet you show him tenderness,
Yet you are gentle with him
while he has no such regard for you.
And he does not appreciate that of you
وَقَدand already نَهَيناكَwe warned you off عَنهُfrom him
وَقَد نَهَيناكَ عَنهُ
فَلَمbut did not تُطِعyou heed مَنthe one who نَهاكاwarned you off
فَلَم تُطِع مَن نَهاكا
And we have warned you against him,
We forbade you from him
but you did not heed those who warned you.
But you did not obey those who forbade you
وَماand not هَواناour desire لِعُمريby my life
وَما هَوانا لِعُمري
ياO عَمرُوAmr إِلّاexcept هَواكاyour desire
يا عَمرُو إِلّا هَواكا
And our desire, by my life,
And it was not for my sake, O Amr
O Amr, is nothing but your desire.
Except for your love of him
فَاِنظُرso look لِنَفسِكَto yourself وَاِحذَرand beware
فَاِنظُر لِنَفسِكَ وَاِحذَر
مِنهَfrom him عَلَيهاupon it (yourself) الهَلاكاdestruction
مِنهَ عَلَيها الهَلاكا
So look out for yourself, and beware
So look out for yourself and beware
of the ruin he may bring upon you.
Of him who seeks to destroy you
وَاِرفُضand reject لِمَنfor the one who صارَhas begun يَغشىhe visits
وَاِرفُض لِمَن صارَ يَغشى
قَوماًa group of people وَلاand not يَخشاكاhe fears you
قَوماً وَلا يَخشاكا
And spurn the one who has taken to visiting
And reject those who dare to cover up
other people and has no fear of you.
A people and do not fear you
فَلَيسَfor it is not نَرضىwe are content بِماwith what لاnot
فَلَيسَ نَرضى بِما لا
يَكونُthere is فيهِin it رِضاكاyour contentment
يَكونُ فيهِ رِضاكا
For we are not content with what does not
For we do not accept what does not
bring you contentment.
Align with your acceptance
صاحِبbefriend سِواهُsomeone other than him وَدَعهُand leave him
صاحِب سِواهُ وَدَعهُ
مُصاحِباًkeeping company لِسِواكاwith someone other than you
مُصاحِباً لِسِواكا
Befriend someone else, and leave him
Take on another companion and leave him
to keep company with someone other than you.
Accompanying your equals
فَنَحنُfor we فيin كُلِّevery يَومٍday
فَنَحنُ في كُلِّ يَومٍ
نَرىwe regard مُناكَyour wishes مُناكاyour wishes
نَرى مُناكَ مُناكا
For we, each and every day,
For we see your grievance every day
regard your wishes as your wishes.
