قَدindeed نالَhe gained خَيرونُKhayrun خَيراًa favor لَيسَis not يُكفَرُهُdenied it
وَزادَand he rose فيin قَدرِهِhis standing مُذsince صِرتُI began أَذكُرُهُmentioning him
Khayrun has indeed gained a favor he is not denied,
The virtuous have gained virtues that cannot be repaid,
And he has risen in esteem since I began mentioning him.
And my esteem for him grew as I recalled him.
كُوَيتِبٌa petty scribe مِنamong بَنيthe sons of الأَقباطِthe Copts لَيسَthere is not لَهُfor him
شَيءٌanything يَعيشُhe lives بِهِon it إِلّاexcept تَشَرُّرُهُhis wicked conduct
A petty scribe among the sons of the Copts, who has no
A Coptic scribe who has naught to live on
Means of living except his wicked conduct.
But the scattering of his pages.
فَلَوso if وُليتُI were appointed عَلىover الكُتّابِthe scribes مُحتَسِباًas an inspector
لَكانَthen he would be أَوَّلَthe first قُبطِيٍّCopt أُدَرِّرُهُI would flog him
So, were I appointed inspector over the scribes,
Had I been in charge of the scribes as censor,
He would be the first Copt I would flog.
The first Copt I would have evicted was him.
