عِنانِthe rein الشَبابِyouth عَنِaway from الخِندريسِaged wine
It is prudent that a young man not turn
The youth must with wisdom rein his joys
the reins of youth away from aged wine,
And age with kindness should his pains disguise
وَأَنand that يُكرِمَhe honors الشَيبَgray hair إِنif زارَهُit visits him

and that he honor gray hair if it visits him,
Wine-drinking loses honour when excess
and hide from it the faces of the cups.
Makes man forgetful of his nobleness
فَماfor … not خُلطَةُkeeping company اللَهوِrevelry مَحمودَةٌpraiseworthy

For keeping company with revelry is not praiseworthy
when ivory mingles with ebony.
