إِذا ما تَأَمَّلتَ حالَ اِمرِئٍ

إِذا ما تَأَمَّلتَ حالَ اِمرِئٍ

فَلَم يَكُ مِمَنَّ لَهُ قاعِدَ

فَلَم يَكُ مِمَنَّ لَهُ قاعِدَ

If you reflect upon a man's condition,

Whenever you look upon the state of a man

and he is not one with a firm foundation,

Who has none to give him solace or cheer

فَكُن مِن مَوَدَّتِهِ هارِباً

فَكُن مِن مَوَدَّتِهِ هارِباً

فَما في مَوَدَتِهِ فائِدَه

فَما في مَوَدَتِهِ فائِدَه

then flee from his friendship,

Then from giving him your love flee away

for there is no benefit in his friendship.

For no use comes from loving one so drear
