بَلَوتُI tested بَنيthe sons of الدُنياthis world فَلَمand did not أَرَفيهِمُI see among them
سِوىexcept مَنwhoever غَداwent about وَالبُخلُand miserliness مِلءُfilling ثِيابِهِhis robes
I tested the sons of this world and saw none among them
I tested the people of this world, but found in them
Except those who went about with miserliness filling their robes.
None except the miser with meanness filling his clothes.
فَجَرَّدتُso I unsheathed مِنfrom غِمدِthe scabbard of القَناعَةِcontentment مُرهَفاًa keen-edged sword
قَطَعتُI severed رَجائيmy hope مِنهُمof them بِذُبابِهِwith its point
So I unsheathed a keen-edged sword from the scabbard of contentment;
So I stripped myself of the scabbard of contentment, unsheathing my sword,
With its point I severed my hope of them.
And cut off my hopes in them with its edge.
فَلاso not ذاthis one يَرانيsees me قائِماًstanding فيin طَريقِهِhis path
وَلاnor ذاthis one يَرانيsees me جالِساًsitting عِندَat بابِهِhis door
So this one does not see me standing in his path,
Thus none shall see me standing in their path,
Nor does that one see me sitting at his door.
Nor sitting at their door.
