أَصبَحتُI have become أَكثَرَthe most خَلقِcreatures of اللَهِGod كُلُّهُمall of them
عِشقاًin love لِرَوضٍwith a garden قَدalready اِخضَرَّتhave turned green جَوانِبُهُits sides
I have become, of all God’s creatures, the most
I have fallen deeply in love with a garden
Enamored of a garden whose sides have turned green.
Whose sides have become verdantly green
رَيّاهُits fragrance نَكهَتُهُits breath وَالقَطرُand the rain مَضحَكُهُits smiling mouth
وَالوَردُand the roses وَجنَتُهُits cheek الآسُthe myrtle شارِبُهُits mustache
Its fragrance is its breath, and the rain its smile;
Its freshness nourished by the falling rain
The roses are its cheek, the myrtle its mustache.
Its roses quenched by the gentle stream
فَفيمَthen why لاnot أَتَرَضّاهُI seek its favor بِصافِيَةٍwith clear wine
مِمّعاof what (apparently a typo for مِمّا) يُناسِبُresembles مِنهاof it (the wine) ماthat which تُناسِبُهُit (the wine) resembles it
Then why should I not seek its favor with clear wine,
Why then am I not inspired to sing its praises
Of a kind that mirrors the garden as the garden mirrors it?
In verses befitting its enchanting scenes?
وَقَدand indeed وَجَدتُI have found سَبيلَthe path to العُذرِthe excuse واضِحَةًclear
بِأَنَّbecause لَيلِيَmy night لَمdid not تَطلُعrise كَواكِبُهُits stars
And I have found the path to an excuse clear:
For I have found the path of excuse so clearly -
The stars of my night have not risen.
My night has not yet unveiled its stars and dreams
