خَليلٌa friend تَغاضيهِhis overlooking of faults أَقَلُّthe least خِلالِهِof his virtues
خَليلٌ تَغاضيهِ أَقَلُّ خِلالِهِ
I did wrong, and he granted me the protection of his forbearance—
I sought his favor, so he gave me reins to bear it,
A friend whose overlooking of faults is the least of his virtues.
A friend whose faults are fewer than his virtues.
يَجودُhe gives generously عَلىto مَنwhoever يَستَغيثُseeks help بِجاهِهِthrough his influence
يَجودُ عَلى مَن يَستَغيثُ بِجاهِهِ

وَيَسخو عَلى مَن يَستَميحُ بِمالِهِ
He is generous to whoever seeks help through his influence,
He gives freely to those who seek his name’s protection,
And gives freely to whoever seeks a gift from his wealth.
And generously aids those who ask his wealth’s permission.

إِذا كَشَفَ الإِعدامُ سَوءَةَ حالِهِ
So I would ransom him for shielding a man with wealth
So I ransom him from all that one may hide with riches
When destitution lays bare the shame of his condition.
When destitution reveals the meanness of his state.
