مِنfrom أَينَwhere يَستَنفِعُderives benefit الفَتىthe young man بِفَتىfrom a young man
إِنif كانَhe is مِمَّنone of those who إِذاwhen جَفاهُhe shuns him جَفاhe shuns
How can a young man benefit from another young man
From whence does a young man benefit from a comrade
If he is one who, when the other shuns him, shuns him in turn?
If he is one who turns away when fortune turns from him?
أَحرِhow fitting! بِهِfor him أَنthat تَدومَshould endure خَلَّتُهُhis friendship
بِهِwith him إِذاif طابَbecame pleasant طَعمُهُhis savor وَصَفاand became pure
How fitting that his friendship should endure
It is better that his friendship does not endure
With him, if his savor is pleasant and pure!
When his character turns bitter after being sweet
أَولىmore deserving الخَليلَينِthe two friends بِالمَبَرَّةِof kindness مِنthe one who
جَنىcommitted a wrong عَلَيهِagainst him خَليلُهُhis friend فَعَفاand then forgave
Of the two friends, the more deserving of kindness is the one
The friend most deserving of friendship is he who
Whom his friend wronged, but who forgave.
Forgives when his comrade wrongs him
