أَذاقَcaused to taste قَلبيmy heart أَسىًsorrow بِهِجرَتِهِthrough his desertion
مَنhe who كانَused to be ليfor me مُسعِداًgladdening بِمُهجَتِهِwith his soul
He made my heart taste sorrow through his desertion—
He made my heart taste sorrow by his abandonment
He who once gladdened me with his soul.
He who had brought me joy with his affection
مُنَعَّمٌpampered طالَماfor a long time نَعَمتُI delighted بِهِin him
بِزَعمِaccording to the claim of مَنwhoever لامَreproached فيfor مَحَبَّتِهِlove of him
A pampered one, in whom I long delighted,
Long have I enjoyed his favor
According to whoever reproached me for loving him.
Despite the reproach of those who fault his love
غُصنٌa branch مِنَof البانِthe bān tree فَوقَهُabove it قَمَرٌa moon
يَضحَكُlaughs زَهواًproudly فيin لَيلِthe night of طُرَّتِهِhis forelock
A branch of the bān tree, with a moon above it,
A branch of willow above which shines the moon
Laughing proudly in the night of his forelock.
Laughing in the night air in its drowsiness
الراحُwine قَبلَbefore الصَباحِdawn ريقَتُهُhis saliva
وَالبَدرُand the full moon فيin الحُسنِbeauty دونَbelow طَلعَتِهِhis countenance
His saliva is wine before dawn;
The wind before dawn intoxicated it
And in beauty the full moon falls short of his countenance.
And the moon in beauty without its rising
كَأَنَّas though أَنفاسُهُhis breaths وَنَكهَتُهُand his mouth's fragrance
نَسيمُa breeze زَهرٍflowers زَهاwas radiant بِزَهرَتِهِwith its bloom
As though his breaths and his mouth's fragrance
As if its breath and scent
Were a breeze from flowers radiant in their bloom.
Were a gentle flower breeze it blew with its blossom
لَمّاwhen رَآنيhe saw me أَسيرَa captive of مَسكَنَةٍabasement
فيin يَدِهِhis hand حالَturned away عَنfrom مَوَدَّتِهِhis affection
When he saw me a captive of abasement
When he saw me captive to melancholy
In his hand, he withdrew his affection.
In his hand he changed from his affection
وَقدand already نَهانيwarned me العَذولُthe reproacher عَنهُagainst him كَماjust as
عَلَقتُI clung مِنهُfrom him بِحَبلِto the cord of خِلَّتِهِhis close friendship
And the reproacher had warned me against him, just as
Though the beloved forbade me from him as
I clung to him by the cord of his friendship.
I clung to the rope of his estrangement
