O friend, no reproach if you do not
sway me toward renewed friendship.

I only came to knock at the door, since
my experience of it had been free of vexation.

So when the one I waited upon became
unmoved by me or by my arrival,
صُنتُI guarded نَفسيmyself كَماas يَليقُbefits بِمِثليfor one like me

I guarded my dignity, as befits one like me,
and fortified myself with estrangement built high.

Fulfilling one's duty to patrons is not worth
what one suffers from the slaves' ill temper.
