أَباO father of الفَضلِal-Fadl (excellence) تُبديyou display تَمَصبَطرُماًpompous swagger

O Abu al-Fadl, you flaunt your pompous swagger,
while you are far removed from excellence.
فَكَمso how long ذاthis وَأَنتَwhile you تُغَنّيsing لَناto us
غِناءَa song أَمَرَّmore bitter مِنَthan الحَنظَلِcolocynth
So how long will you keep singing us
a song more bitter than colocynth?
وَتوقِعُand you beat time إيقاعَthe rhythm of مَستَبرَدٍone deemed insipid
وَتُنشِدُand you recite إِنشدَthe recitation of مُستَثقَلٍone deemed tiresome
And you beat time like an insipid performer,
and recite like a tiresome reciter.
فَآخِرُso the end of ذاthis التيهِarrogance قُلtell ليme مَتىwhen
وَإِنeven if كانَit is تيهاًarrogance بِلاwithout أَوَّلِa beginning
So tell me, when will this arrogance end,
even if it is arrogance without a beginning?

If you choose to draw near, then do not let
your speech descend from on high.

Otherwise, I shall strike my lord's nape,
even if he were a better player than Zalzal.
