ياO مَنyou whom أَرىI deem نُصحَهُadvising him فَرضاًa duty لِعِزَّتِهِbecause of his dearness
كَأَنَّنيas though I were والِدٌa father حانٍtenderhearted عَلىtoward وَلَدِa child
O you whom I deem it a duty to counsel, because you are dear,
As though I were a father tender toward his child.
الرُشدُright guidance وَالغَيُّand error ذاthis one صافٍclear وَذاand that one كَدَرٌmurky
فَأَيماso whichever شِئتَyou wish مِنof هَذاthis وَذاand that فِردِthen drink
Guidance and error: this one clear, and that one murky.
So drink from whichever you wish—this or that.
فَإِنand if قَدَرتُI am capable عَلىof ماwhat تَستَعينُyou seek help بِهِthrough it
فَلاthen do not تَدَعهُleave it فَلَيسَfor … is not اليَومُtoday مِثلَlike غَدِtomorrow
And if I can provide what you may draw on for help,
Then do not forgo it, for today is not like tomorrow.
