ياO غُصُناًbough يَهتَزُّsways فيin شَمسِthe sun
أَوopening fragment of “you left me lonely” حَشَتنيremaining fragment of “you left me lonely” مِنfrom ذَلِكَthat الأُنسِcompanionship
O bough swaying in the sun,
you have left me bereft of that companionship.
وَصِرتُand I became مِنafter بَعدِكَyour departure فيat مَأتَمٍa mourning gathering
وَكُنتُand I had been مِنthrough قُربِكَyour nearness فيat عُرسِa wedding
And after you left, I found myself at a funeral,
though near you I had been at a wedding.
فَعُدso return إِلىto ماwhat مِنكَfrom you عَوَّدتَنيyou accustomed me to
So return to what I grew used to from you—
kindness, O fairest of humankind.
فَأَنتَfor you وَالوُدُّand the affection الَّذيthat بَينَناbetween us
أَعَزُّdearer مِنthan نَفسيmy own self عَلىto نَفسيmy own self
For you and the affection between us
are dearer to me than my very self.
