وَمَضيرَةٌ كَالفَضَّةِ البَيضاءِ
I have fried meat and cold kid meat,
And sour-milk stew like white silver;

And sausages, not one of which is seen
Except like a red, unripe date;

And a delicious muṭajja dish, with a chicken in it,
Which I chose of Indian ancestry;

And cold dishes, their boiled fare displayed
In a bowl like a green garden;

And grape wine—if it is diluted
By a cupbearer, water clouds its clarity;

And a slender-waisted man who sways as he moves,
Like the swaying of a tawny spear.
لَمdid not يولِناbestow upon us قَطُّever الجَميلُthe handsome one غِناءَهُhis singing
لَم يولِنا قَطُّ الجَميلُ غِناءَهُ
إِلّاexcept that وَجازَيناهُand we repaid him بِالإِصغاءِwith attentive listening
إِلّا وَجازَيناهُ بِالإِصغاءِ
Never did the handsome one offer us his singing
Without our repaying him with attentive listening.
