أَياO مَنthe one who هُوَhe is الماءُthe water الزُلالُclear and sweet الَّذيthat يَجريflows
وَمَنand the one who رَأيُهُhis counsel عَونيmy aid عَلىagainst نُوَبِthe vicissitudes الدَهرِof time
O you who are the clear, sweet water that flows,
And whose counsel is my aid against the vicissitudes of time,
أَتَحسَبُdo you think ذَنبيmy fault كانَwas مِنّيon my part تَعَمُّداًdeliberate
إِذاًthen لاmay ... not صَفاًbe serene عَيشيmy life بِهَجرِكَthrough your forsaking لِلهَجرِof estrangement
Do you think my fault was deliberate on my part?
Then may your forsaking estrangement bring no peace to my life.
فَلاso do not تَترُكِlet العَتبَreproach العَسوفَharsh يَرُدُّنيturn me away
وَماand not قَضِيَتwas fulfilled عِندَin الرِضاcontentment حاجَةُthe need العُذرِof an excuse
So do not let harsh reproach turn me away,
For an excuse serves no purpose when you are pleased.
فَإِنfor if أَكُI am قَدindeed أَزَرَتhas brought disgrace عَلَيَّupon me إِساءَةٌa misdeed
فَرُبَّتَماfor sometimes يُزريcasts discredit الكُسوفُan eclipse عَلىupon البَدرِthe full moon
For if a misdeed has indeed brought disgrace upon me,
An eclipse, too, sometimes mars the full moon.
إِذاif حُلتَyou turn away عَنfrom وَصليfriendship with me لَأَدنىfor the slightest جِنايَةٍoffense
فَحُلthen turn مِنbecause of جِناياتِthe offenses الخُمارِof the hangover عَلىagainst الخَمرِwine
If you abandon my friendship for the slightest offense,
Then turn against wine for the hangover's offenses.
