لا تَسقِ ماء التَجَنّي مَن تُصاحِبُه

لا تَسقِ ماء التَجَنّي مَن تُصاحِبُه

فَإِنَّهُ كَدِرٌ مَن ذاقَهُ شَرِقا

فَإِنَّهُ كَدِرٌ مَن ذاقَهُ شَرِقا

Do not make the one you befriend drink the water of unjust blame.

Do not offer the bitter cup to your companion,

For it is murky; whoever tastes it chokes.

For it is turbid for whoever tastes it.

وَكُن رَفيقاً رَفيقاً لا تَكُن ضَجِراً

وَكُن رَفيقاً رَفيقاً لا تَكُن ضَجِراً

فَخَيرُ مَن رافَقَ الإِنسانَ مَن رَفِقا

فَخَيرُ مَن رافَقَ الإِنسانَ مَن رَفِقا

And be a gentle companion; do not be irritable.

And be a gentle friend, do not be annoyed,

For the best of those who accompany a person is one who is gentle.

For the best companion of man is he who is gentle.
