أَباO father of عَلِيٍّAli اِعفُpardon عَنّيme فَقَدfor indeed
ضاقَhas grown too narrow فَسيحُthe vast expanse of العُذرِexcuse عَنfor ذَنبيmy sin
O Abu Ali, pardon me, for
the vast expanse of excuse has grown too narrow for my sin.
وَإِنand though جَرىhappened مِنِّيَfrom me ماwhat قَدalready جَرىhappened
فَالثَلمُyet a notch قَدmay يَحدُثُoccur فيin العَضبِthe keen sword
And though I have done what I have done,
even a keen sword may suffer a notch.
فَعُدso return إِلىto الحِلمِforbearance الَّذيthat لَمhas not يَزَلceased
يَذودُwards off عَنّيfrom me حائِمَcircling العَتبِreproach
So return to the forbearance that has always
warded off the reproach circling about me.
فَإِنّيfor I مُذsince صِرتَyou became ليto me هاجِراًforsaking
مِثلَlike رَحىًa millstone راحَتwent on moving بِلاwithout قُطبِa spindle
For since you began to shun me, I have been
like a millstone turning without a spindle.
إِنif أَرجُI hope for إِغضاءَكَyour overlooking عَنof زَلَّتيmy lapse
فَالغَيثُthen rain قَدmay يُرجىbe hoped for مِنَfrom السُحبِthe clouds
If I hope you will overlook my lapse,
then rain may be hoped for from the clouds.
