قَدindeed قُلتُI said لِلقائِلِto the one who says لاdo not تَنبَسِطtake liberties
إِلىto صَديقٍa friend لَكَof yours فيin حالِany circumstance
I have told the one who says, 'Do not take liberties
With a friend of yours in any circumstance':
إِذاif صَديقٌa friend لَمdoes not يَبِنshow حِرصَهُhis eagerness
لِلناسِto people فيin خِدمَةِservice إِدلالِconfident familiarity
If a friend does not show his eagerness
To others in service born of close friendship,
فَماthen what اِنتِفاعيmy benefit بِصَديقيfrom my friend إِذاif
لَمdoes not يَتَكَلَّفundertake حِملَbearing أَثقاليmy burdens
Then what use is my friend to me if
He does not undertake to bear my burdens?
خَيرُthe best أَصدِقاءِfriends of المَرءِa man لِلمَرءِfor a man مَنone who

The best friend a man can have is one who
Shares life and wealth with him.
