ياO سَروَةًa cypress فيin كَثيبِa sand dune
أَسرَفتَyou have gone too far فيin تَعذيبيtormenting me
O cypress on a sand dune,
You have gone too far in tormenting me,
وَجُزتَand you have exceeded طَورَthe bounds التَجَنّيunjust cruelty
عَلىtoward المُعَنّىthe tormented one الكَئيبِthe sorrowful
And exceeded the bounds of cruelty
Toward the tormented, sorrowful one.
وَجُملَةُand the sum الأَمرِof the matter أَنّيthat I
قَدindeed قَلَّhas grown small مِنكَof you نَصيبيmy share
And the sum of the matter is that I
Have had but a scant share of you.
وَآفَتيand my affliction فيكَin loving you قَلبيmy heart
لاmay … never كانَit have existed بَينَamong القُلوبِhearts
And my heart is my affliction in loving you—
May it never have existed among hearts!
