O my true refuge, and O my master,
and my shelter above all other shelters.

هُوَhe فيin الطَرفِrarities سَيِّدُchief الأَفذاذِthe peerless ones
Truly, our day's perfumer has changed in form;
in rarities he is chief among the peerless.

Whenever he brings us the camphor of cloud,
he follows it with the musk of drizzle.

And we have a hamper: if a friend attempts
to describe it to the utmost, he can only babble.

You see no equal to what we have gathered among
foods, save for the most generous of providers.

Its face beckons a man's appetite,
and draws even those reluctant to praise it [uncertain reading].

And we have unripe dates, rarities of the palms;
to me they are sweeter than Azadh dates.

And wine shines forth with a crown of bubbles;
one pearl of it stands above Qubadh's crown.
مِنfrom بَناتِdaughters of البُيوتِthe houses لاnot مِنfrom بَناتٍdaughters
رَبّيتُI reared فيin مَخازِنِthe storehouses of النَبّاذِthe wine-maker
It is of the daughters of homes, not of daughters
I reared in the wine-maker's stores.

And a friend—if you are my treasure and my wealth
always, he is my shelter and refuge.
وَمُغَنٍّand a singer لَوif اِتَخَذناهُwe took him خِلّاًas a close friend

And a singer: if we took him as a friend,
we would take pride in that choice.

He is one of Egypt's sons, a man of merit, by my life;
he is not one of Baghdad's sons.

And it is a day when, if the birds lament
or the sky weeps, the Khurdadhi laughs aloud.

And my life is in drinking amid greenery,
where I go at dawn among fine linen and silk.

Every river, when the east wind ripples it,
reveals its water and gleaming mail to the eye.

And my delight is wasted by the sickness of separation;
so heal my delight of it one day by drawing near.

I am a captive in the grip of my waiting;
so graciously rescue me from its bondage.
